HOW ARE YOU DEALING WITH YOUR ANGRY EMOTION❓

KEY VERSE:
Ephesians 4:26

MESSAGE:
Anger can be defined as intense displeasure, often, with an urge for retaliation. It is a display of negative emotion because one feels aggrieved. There are two ways one can express anger. One can either blow up when aggrieved or suppress (bottle up) one’s feelings. Whichever way, uncontrolled anger can be dangerous – even devastating. Bottled up anger is like acid that can corrode the vessel in which it is stored.

An English Anatomist, Dr. John Hunter, while presenting an academic seminar to prove that anger has the capacity to destroy the one who harbors it, got locked in an argument that infuriated him very badly. Consequently, he suffered heart attack and died instantly. Anger can cause heart attack. Medical experts say that 60-80% of sickness prevalent in the society are emotionally induced. These include headache, ulcer, stroke, arthritis, high blood pressure and kidney disorders.

Spiritually, anger grieves the Holy Spirit (Eph. 4:27). It affects one’s prayer life and relationship with God. This, little wonder, was why Moses could not enter the Promised Land. No matter how anointed a man may be, he becomes disconnected spiritually once he is enraged.

Meanwhile, the scriptures do not condemn anger per session, after all, anger is a natural and reflex phenomenon. It is also a universal feature of all living things -even animals and God Himself get angry. What is evil is display of sinful actions because one is angry. “Be angry but do not sin”.

Getting angry because you are hurt is not sin but remaining angry to the point of bitterness, keeping malice and outright hatred against the person that hurt you is sin. Anger has separated homes and turned love-birds into arch-enemies. It has led to bloodshed. All wars are products of anger; even innocent persons have become victims of anger due to “misplaced aggression”. The list is endless. Anger therefore, is better controlled than expressed.
Even the Nigerian slapping Senator did all he did based on an uncontrollable anger

To check angry emotion, learn to exercise self-control. Say no to the urge for retaliation (Prov. 12:16).❗ Tolerate and forgive others; it is human to err. Be diplomatic in dealing with those who are already boiling with rage (Prov. 15:1). ❗Quit hostile environment until normalcy returns (Prov. 17:14). ❗Above all, be spirit-controlled.❗

CONTROLLING THOUGHTS:
Anger is like acid that corrodes the vessel in which it is stored.

PRAYER:
God, give me grace to control my angry emotion.
