DO YOU KNOW THE DANGERS OF PRIDE❓

Memory verse:
“Whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted” (Luke 14:11).

Message:
Naaman arrived Israel purposely for the healing of his leprosy. As he got to the house of the Prophet Elisha, who was to pray for his healing and with his entourage on horses and chariots, the prophet did not come out to welcome him. Rather, the prophet sent him information to go to River Jordan and dip himself in water for seven times, in order to be healed of his leprosy.

Naaman could not take this; he felt humiliated and not respected by the prophet. How dare the prophet ask him to go to River Jordan and take a bath? Is he insinuating that he did not take his bath before coming or the one he took in Syrian river was not good enough? Does it mean he did not know the kind of personality who came to see him? Did he know that he was dealing with the Commander of the host of Syrian army? The above were probably questions that filled Naaman’s mind.

Naaman went away in anger until his servants begged him to go back and obey the prophet. When he did, the leprosy left him. If he had remained angry and in his arrogance had refused to do what Elisha asked him to do, he would have remained a leper all his life. What a shame it would have been to such a prestigious man!

Many times we have lost great opportunities because of pride. People have cut short apprenticeship because their master was rude to them. People have even left the church because the pastor scolded them over a wrong attitude. A lady moved out of her elder sister’s house because her sister demanded that she should help take care of her babies. And she is not faring any better today.

Jesus said if a man does not humble himself he may not be exalted. Many great masters today were once servants. The great prophet Elisha once poured water into the hands of Elijah (2Kings 2:11). After he had completed his service in humility and faithfulness, the master showed him the way that catapulted him to greater prophetic height. Elisha eventually got the double portion of Elijah’s anointing. Humility is a virtue that leads to exaltation. Avoid pride; God brings down the proud.

CONTROLLING THOUGHTS:
He that humbles himself shall be exalted.

PRAYER:
God, give me the heart to serve in humility for that is the pathway to honour. Amen.

BIBLE READING FOR THE YEAR:
